Six things that matter

Deep experience

Fourteen years of full-time watchmaking in Chiang Mai, with formal training in both Thailand and Switzerland behind our lead watchmaker.

Written records

Every service includes documented timing results and a summary of work done. Your watch leaves with a history it can carry forward.

Transparent pricing

Service prices are published and held. For restoration work, each stage is costed and agreed in advance so there are no unexpected figures at collection.

English communication

We communicate fluently in English — important for expatriates and visitors who want to understand exactly what is happening with their watch.

Originality preserved

We avoid unnecessary replacements and never carry out irreversible work without your explicit agreement. What can be saved, we save.

Right equipment

Ultrasonic cleaning, timing machines, and watchmaker-grade instruments — not improvised, not approximate. The tools the work requires.

01 — Expertise

Formal training, long practice

Watchmaking at a serious level requires years of supervised practice alongside formal study of movement mechanics. Our founder trained under working watchmakers before establishing Patina, and the two additional watchmakers on our team each bring further years of focused experience.

  • Swiss and Japanese mechanical movements
  • Vintage and antique calibres
  • Case and bracelet restoration
  • 14+ years in the Chiang Mai market

In practice

Depth of experience means fewer surprises. When a movement presents an unusual fault — a broken jewel setting, a worn cannon pinion, a balance staff that has been replaced incorrectly in the past — a watchmaker who has encountered it before knows what to look for and how to address it without extending the work unnecessarily.

02 — Technology

The right instruments for precise work

Good watchmaking does not require the most expensive equipment available, but it does require the correct equipment. Our workshop uses an ultrasonic parts cleaner, a multi-function timing machine, a watchmaker's lathe for minor part fabrication, and grade-specific lubricants from established Swiss suppliers.

  • Ultrasonic movement cleaning
  • Timing machine, six positions
  • Swiss-grade lubricants throughout
  • Proper case press and gasket tools

Why it matters

An ultrasonic cleaner removes hardened oil residue from pivot holes and jewels without the risk of mechanical damage from brush cleaning. A timing machine gives objective measurements across multiple positions, so regulation is based on data rather than feel. These tools are not optional; they are standard practice in a properly run workshop.

03 — Communication

Plain language from start to finish

A common frustration with specialist workshops is that assessments are delivered in technical language that leaves the owner unable to make an informed decision. At Patina, we describe what we find in terms that make sense to someone who is not a watchmaker, so you can decide what to do with clear information rather than vague reassurance.

  • Written condition summary at Health Check
  • Clear scope agreed before work begins
  • Updates if scope needs to change
  • Full English-language service

What to expect

Drop-offs typically take fifteen to twenty minutes. We examine the piece in front of you, describe what we observe, and give you an honest recommendation. There is no pressure to proceed with additional work beyond what you came in for. If you want time to think, that is fine — we can hold the watch while you decide.

04 — Value

Prices that reflect the work

Watch servicing in Thailand spans a wide range of price points, from very inexpensive repairs that may not involve proper tools or lubricants, to official brand service centres with charges that may exceed the market value of many watches. Patina sits in a considered middle ground: professional work at prices that reflect what is actually involved.

  • Published prices, no hidden additions
  • Restoration stages agreed before each begins
  • Health Check from ฿3,800
  • Post-service follow-up at no additional charge

How we price

Prices reflect time, materials, and the complexity of the specific calibre. A mass-market ETA movement takes less time to service than an older pocket-watch calibre with bespoke parts. We do not apply a standard rate to all movements regardless of complexity. If your watch falls outside the standard service range, we will tell you and agree a specific price before starting.

05 — Results

Measurable, documented outcomes

A serviced movement should keep better time and run more consistently than it did before service. We measure this rather than assume it, and we include the measurements with every job. If the results are not where we want them, we regulate further before returning the watch.

  • Timing results across six positions
  • Target: within ±10 sec/day for most movements
  • Free re-regulation within 6 weeks
  • Archive documentation for restored pieces

What the documentation includes

The service record we provide notes the condition at intake, the work carried out, the parts replaced (and why), the lubricants used, and the timing results across positions. For heirloom restorations, the archive document is more detailed still, covering the watch's history where known, photographs at key stages, and a full account of decisions made.

What Sets Patina Apart

Distinctive features of our approach

The Archive Record

For heirloom restoration work, we produce a detailed archive document that travels with the watch — condition photographs, work history, parts record, and timing data. Few workshops at any price point offer this as standard.

No drop-and-go

We take a few minutes at every drop-off to examine the piece and discuss it with you. The person you speak with is the watchmaker who will work on your watch — not a counter assistant passing on a ticket.

Climate-aware advice

Thailand's climate affects lubricant life differently from temperate countries. We factor this into our servicing recommendations, offering guidance suited to the conditions your watch actually lives in rather than generic intervals.

Free re-regulation

Movements settle during the first weeks of wear after a service. We invite clients to return within six weeks for a follow-up timing check and any fine adjustment needed — this is included in the original service price.
